Good news for anyone with a Sri Lanka surf trip on their to-do list: British Airways is flying direct between London and Colombo again, for the first time in over a decade.
From October 23, 2026, BA resumes seasonal direct flights between London Gatwick (LGW) and Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB), operating three times a week through the winter season. It’s the airline’s first return to the route since 2015, and for UK and European surfers, it opens up a super convinient and hassle free gateway to some of the most fun waves on the planet, perfect for escaping the European winter!
The Details
- Route: London Gatwick (LGW) → Colombo Bandaranaike (CMB)
- Launch date: October 23, 2026
- Frequency: 3 flights per week
- Season: Winter 2026 schedule
It’s a seasonal route rather than a year-round one, but the timing couldn’t be better — and that’s not a coincidence!
No More Detouring Through the Middle East.
Right now, getting to Sri Lanka from Europe almost always means a stop in the Middle East. Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi — all solid airlines, but all adding a layover, a terminal change, and several extra hours to what should be a straightforward long-haul, as well as some uncertainty when it comes to the geopolitics too.
A direct BA service takes that connection out of the equation entirely. One flight, roughly eleven hours, no scrambling through a Gulf mega-hub at 3am.
For travellers who’ve been putting off a Sri Lanka trip purely because of the routing headache, this is the thing that tips it from “one day” to “let’s book it now”!
The Perfect Jump-Off Point for the Maldives
And if you’re looking for a longer, more adventurous surf trip, Colombo sits less than an hour and a half’s flight from the Maldives capital of Malé.
That makes Sri Lanka an excellent jump point for a Maldives surf trip — and now, with a direct London service, it’s easier than ever to combine the two.
Break your journey in Sri Lanka, surf the south coast for a week, then hop across to the Maldives some more tropical perfection or a touch of luxury at one of the Maldives surf resorts.
Two very different surf experiences — one a mellow, sand-bottom, beginner-friendly coastline, the other world-class breaks — on a single itinerary that no longer requires threading through a Gulf airport twice.
We’ve been building Sri Lanka–Maldives combo trips for clients for years. This flight just made sorting the travel between the two that much easier.
And October Is When Sri Lanka’s South Coast Turns On
The timing of BA’s return isn’t just convenient for winter sun-seekers — it lines up almost exactly with the start of Sri Lanka’s south coast surf season too.
As the southwest monsoon eases off through October, the swell window opens up along the stretch from Hikkaduwa down through Midigama, Weligama and Ahangama. Consistent groundswell, warm water, and a string of user-friendly points and reef breaks make this one of the more forgiving — and more social — surf destinations in the Indian Ocean, with a season that runs comfortably from October through to April.
In other words: BA’s first flight lands right at the start of the best months to be in the water there. If you’ve been eyeing off a Sri Lanka surf trip, this is the season to do it.
Flying With Surfboards
And if you’re looking to fly with your surfboards, British Airways allows you to take a surfboard up to 240 cm long (that’s 7.8 feet) as part of your standard baggage allowance too.
Direct, surfboard-friendly and running from just £250 each way, honestlty how many more reasons do you need to head to Sri Lanka this year?
