East Coast Sri Lanka Surf Season – Time To Head To Arugam Bay!

There’s a moment every May when the conversation in the surf scene in Sri Lanka quietly shifts. The South Coast crew starts packing up. The WhatsApps start flying. And anyone who’s been to Arugam Bay before gets that familiar itch — because on the other side of the island, the season is about to fire.

Sri Lanka is one of those rare places where you don’t have to fight the calendar. When one coast turns off, the other turns on. And from May through to October the East Coast is where you want to be.

Why the East Coast Works When the South Doesn’t

It comes down to the monsoon. The southwest monsoon rolls in around May and brings onshore winds and heavy rain to the south and west of the island — less than ideal conditions, but creates the exact opposite conditions on the east. Those same winds become cross-shore to offshore as they wrap around the island, and suddenly Arugam Bay is sitting in perfect, glassy mornings with a swell on the doorstep.

The season runs May to October with June, July and August delivering the most consistent conditions. Water temps hover around a comfortable 27–28°C, you’ll rarely need more than boardshorts, and the sun generally shows up early and stays late.

Early April can surprise you — Main Point starts breaking before the banks at the surrounding spots have built up properly, so if you time a trip around the Sri Lankan New Year (April 14–15) you can often score it with almost no one out.

The Breaks Worth Knowing

Arugam Bay’s Main Point is the headline act — a long, right-hand point that reels down the bay and offers plenty of room to manoeuvre. On a good swell it gets hollow and fast in sections; on smaller days it’s cruisy and perfect for working on your turns. Intermediate to advanced surfers will get the most out of it, though it’s not intimidating.

Whiskey Point sits a short tuk-tuk ride north of town and is a better call if you’re earlier in your surfing journey. Sandy bottom, mellow walls, and a more relaxed crowd. Sunrise sessions here are hard to beat.

Peanut Farm offers a bit more variety — different sections depending on the sand — and tends to be more consistent than people expect. Good option when Main Point goes too big or too busy.

Pottuvil Point is the reward for the willing. It’s further out, takes more effort to get to, and breaks less often — but when it’s on, it’s one of the longest, emptiest rides on the east coast. Worth monitoring if you’ve got a flexible schedule.

Who Is It For?

Honestly, a wider range of surfers than most people assume.

The reputation of Arugam Bay is built around the main break, which is firmly intermediate-plus territory when the swells building. But the surrounding spots — Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm, especially — are excellent for beginners and improvers. If you’re going as a group with mixed ability levels, you won’t be stuck pulling straws over where to surf each morning.

The vibe is a big part of it too. Arugam Bay is small, walkable, and genuinely low-key in the best possible way. There are great spots to eat, hang out between sessions, and not much pressure to be anywhere. It’s the kind of place that turns a one-week trip into two weeks without you quite noticing how it happened.

When to Book

The sweet spot for most people is June through August — consistently offshore, reliably sunny, and the full spread of breaks are working properly by then. September is quieter crowd-wise and still delivers solid surf, but you’ll see the season starting to wind down by late in the month.

If you’re travelling from Australia, the timing aligns well with the winter school holidays. From the UK, it sits in peak summer — which means flights need booking early if you want decent fares.

We work with a handful of hand-picked camps and properties in and around Arugam Bay, ranging from social surf camps where everything is taken care of to boutique options if you want a bit more comfort and space. Whatever your style, we’ll point you toward the right fit.
