Looking for something different for your next surf adventure with your crew?
How about a 10 night private surf coaching trip across South Africa and Mozambique?
This private surf and safari tour with expert South African guide and international surf coach Dave Renaud ticks all the boxes. Five nights surfing both coasts of Durban, one night in Umfolozi Game Park, four nights at Ponta do Ouro.
This one is harder to put in a box than most surf trips — and that’s entirely the point.
Ten nights with expert surf coach and guide Dave Renaud, covering two of South Africa’s best surf coasts, a night in one of the country’s great wilderness areas, and four days at Ponta do Ouro — an 800-metre sand-bottom point break on the southern Mozambican border that produces some of the longest and most enjoyable waves in Africa.
In between: game drives, braais, excellent food and a cultural diversity that makes this region unlike anywhere else in the surfing world.
Dave has spent a lifetime surfing and coaching in and around Durban. He knows both coasts better than almost anyone — which breaks fire in which conditions, where to find empty waves when the crowds are out, and how to read a swell window and make the most of it.
With a maximum of six guests and no fixed schedule, the trip adapts daily to whatever’s working.
Nights 1–5 — Ballito, North Coast (5 nights)
The first five nights give the group time to work through both sides of one of South Africa’s most underrated surf regions. Durban’s north and south coasts share the same Indian Ocean swell but are separated by the massive bluff that protects the city’s harbour — and the difference in character between the two is significant.
Night 6 — Umfolozi, Ezemvelo World Heritage Game Park
A drive north into the KwaZulu-Natal interior brings the group to Umfolozi — one of South Africa’s oldest and most celebrated game parks, and part of the Ezemvelo iSimangaliso World Heritage Site. Big Five territory.
The following morning begins with a sunrise game drive before heading north to the Mozambican border.
Nights 7–10 — Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique (4 nights)
The Point of Gold. An 800-metre sand-bottom right-hander running along a sand spit at the southern tip of Mozambique — multiple barrel sections at the top, long walling turns through the middle and lower sections, crystal-clear water and the famous Ponta dolphins cruising the lineup throughout.
Four nights and three full days of surf at one of the best and most enjoyable point breaks in Africa. Nearby points and beach breaks fill out the rotation when conditions or energy call for variety.
The trip closes with a drive back across the border to Ballito for the final night before departure.
