THE RESORT

There are luxury surf resorts, and there is NIHI Sumba. This is a surf trip like no other.

NIHI Sumba sits at the Edge of Wildness — a 31-villa property on the west coast of Sumba Island, in the kind of setting that takes a moment to accept as real. Rolling savannah, traditional Sumbanese villages, Nihiwatu Beach below, horses moving along the waterline in the early morning light, and Occy’s Left breaking in the middle distance. It’s the serenity, the culture, and the undeveloped landscape that most people imagined Bali to be — but rarely find there anymore.

The accolades are almost beside the point once you’ve arrived, but they speak for themselves: named the world’s best hotel for two consecutive years, awarded Michelin Three Keys for the second year in a row, and placed No. 35 in the World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026. One of only three hotels in Indonesia to hold the Michelin Three Keys designation. A Certified B Corporation. The kind of resort that changes the standard you hold other resorts to.

For surfers, the headline is one of the most exclusive waves in the world, capped at just 15 surfers. For those travelling with non-surfers, the broader question is answered just as confidently: NIHI delivers one of the most complete luxury resort experiences in Indonesia (and anywhere in the world, for that matter!) regardless of whether anyone paddles out.

OCCY’S LEFT – THE WAVE

Known as God’s Left, or Occy’s Left, the wave that breaks in front of NIHI Sumba is one of the most coveted in the world — and deliberately one of the most protected.

NIHI Sumba limits access to 15 registered surfers per day. Not as a gimmick, but because an uncrowded lineup is the entire point. At its best, Occy’s Left delivers a 300-metre ride through sections of rippable open face and heaving barrels — a wave that challenges even highly experienced surfers. The reward for commiting to your line is a ride that’s hard to describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it first hand.

Peak season runs May to the end of September. Expect consistent 4–6 foot surf, with July and August delivering the largest swells — up to 6–9 feet on solid days, with the occasional 12-foot set on Nihiwatu Beach when it’s really going. May and September offer the calmest conditions; July and August offer the most size.

A jet-ski service is part of every surf session — standard practice for safety at a wave of this nature, and included as part of your surf package.

Surf Level: Intermediate to Advanced for Occy’s Left. The wave demands real experience and respect — its sensitivity to conditions makes it unpredictable, and it rewards surfers who can read and commit. First-timers and beginners are well catered for separately (see below).

Book surf access early. With a cap of 15 surfers per day, spots fill quickly. Enquire through Stoked Surf Adventures when planning your trip, and we’ll help ensure your days in the lineup are locked in.

SURFING FOR ALL LEVELS

Occy’s Left is the headline, but NIHI Sumba caters to the full spectrum of abilities.

Beginners and first-timers can take surf lessons on Nihiwatu Beach when conditions allow, and access Coconut Cove — a calmer, more sheltered spot nearby where gentler waves make learning a breeze as well as being the spot for those looking for something a bit more chilled. A half-day Coconut Cove experience includes breakfast or lunch and a transfer back to the resort — a great option for guests who want to be in the water without the demands of the main break.

Surf lessons are available for all ages, including children, with tandem surfing available to help younger guests develop their connection to the ocean.

THE SURFARI

For those wanting to explore beyond Occy’s Left, NIHI Sumba also offers a Surfari — a guided boat trip exploring the wider Sumba coastline in search of uncrowded waves. A Sumba island surfing adventure for guests ready to venture beyond the main break and make an already unforgettable trip even more so.

BEYOND THE SURF

NIHI’s experience programme is one of the most extensive of any resort in Indonesia — and much of what it offers doesn’t exist anywhere else.

Nihioka Spa
Five kilometres from the resort, reached on foot, horseback or by safari Jeep through traditional villages. Set across 100 acres, the spa sits between rice fields and the ocean below — open-air treatments that will leave you floating on a cloud. Equine massage, reiki, ocean-side treatments and a private villa stay are all part of the Spa Safari experience.

Equine Experiences
Horses are central to Sumbanese culture and to NIHI’s identity. Swimming with horses in the Indian Ocean, horse trail riding through the island’s interior, beach rides at sunrise — experiences that feel like they belong to another era entirely, and that guests consistently cite as the most memorable of any stay.

The Island
Waterfalls, mountain biking, highland treks, river adventures, rice island trekking, Tenun Ikat weaving with local artisans, cooking classes, Japanese culinary experiences, and a Sumba Foundation tour showing the community development and philanthropic work underpinning the resort. Padel courts, pickleball, a fully equipped gym and yoga round out the active options.

For Families
NIHI Wildlings provides supervised activities for children — kids’ horse riding, pony club, chocolate making, weaving and more. The resort is genuinely designed for multi-generational travel, with villa configurations for families of varying sizes and an activity programme that gives younger guests a genuine taste of Sumba’s culture.

ACCOMMODATION

There are 31 villas across the NIHI Sumba estate — each one designed to disappear into the landscape rather than impose on it. Open, airy, built from natural materials, and positioned to make the most of Nihiwatu Beach and the Indian Ocean below.

Villa categories cover solo travellers, couples, honeymoons, families and groups — from intimate single-bedroom options through to multi-bedroom family estates. Standout options for surfers include the Mandaka Surf villa, positioned with the lineup in view, and Marangga Occy’s Villa, the most sought-after address on the property for anyone who’s come specifically for the waves.

All villas include:

  • Three daily meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and all non-alcoholic drinks
  • Unlimited Wi-Fi
  • In-villa minibar with one full restock per day
  • Happiest Hour daily from 5:30–6:30pm with free-flow domestic beers and house wine
  • Complimentary tour of Sumba Foundation projects
  • Stand-up paddleboarding and snorkelling at Nihiwatu Beach (weather permitting)
  • Scheduled group yoga and meditation classes

DINING

Four venues, three daily meals included — and a Michelin Three Keys-awarded kitchen behind all of it.

Ombak Restaurant
The heart of NIHI’s dining. Open-air, beachfront, sandy floors and an ocean deck that makes the shift from surf session to dinner feel entirely natural. The menu draws on Sumbanese and international flavours, built around produce from the resort’s own organic garden and fish caught the same day. Breakfast and dinner are served here and included in your package. Live entertainment most evenings. Dress code: casual. Shoes: optional.

Nio Beach Club
A laid-back open-air pavilion beside the resort’s 20-metre infinity lap pool, looking straight out over Nihiwatu Beach and Occy’s Left. The lunch venue — wood-fired pizzas, grilled catch, fresh salads, long afternoons by the water. Sundays and Thursdays it doubles as a breakfast spot, often with NIHI’s Sumba horses taking their morning swim in the background.

Kaboku
NIHI’s Japanese restaurant — and one of the more remarkable dining experiences in eastern Indonesia. A sunken room adjacent to the Nio pool, maximum six guests, seven seasonal omakase courses prepared by NIHI’s Japanese chefs, paired with sake and Japanese whisky. Book before arrival or you won’t get a seat!

The Boathouse Bar
The natural end point to any day at NIHI. Set on the edge of the surf with sweeping ocean views, this is the resort’s most relaxed gathering place — salt air, no dress code, and a daily Happiest Hour from 5:30 to 6:30pm with free-flow domestic beers and house wine. Whether you’re coming straight from Occy’s Left or the Nihioka Spa, the Boathouse is where the day properly finishes.
