Looking to get off the beaten track on your next surf adventure?
This private 12-night surf tour through Mozambique with former expert South African guide and international surf coach Dave Renaud takes in some of the funnest waves in South Africa and Mozambique, including Tofo Beach and Ponta do Ouro.
This is not a group tour. There are no fixed departure dates, no strangers and no compromise on where you surf or when.
Expert coach Dave Renaud takes a maximum of four guests through two of Mozambique’s best surf destinations over 12 nights — coaching, guiding and local knowledge included, the rest of the world left behind.
Dave has over 20 years of high-level coaching experience, including a stint as head coach of the English Surfing Team. He runs surf coaching programmes in Sri Lanka, Arugam Bay and the Maldives — and this Mozambique tour is built on the same foundation: expert eyes on your surfing in waves most visitors never reach, with a flexible format that adapts to what your group actually needs.
Whether that’s structured coaching with video analysis and technique work, or pure surf guiding through the best breaks in the area, Dave calibrates to the group in front of him.
The route covers Tofo Beach on the central coast — five nights of surf at one of Africa’s most vibrant seaside destinations — followed by a road trip south to Ponta do Ouro, where an 800-metre sand-bottom point produces some of the longest and best waves on the continent.
Day 1 — Ballito to Maputo
An early start from Ballito/Durban and a long drive north into Mozambique, arriving in Maputo for a layover. First night in Mozambique.
Day 2 — Maputo to Tofo Beach
Another long drive north through Mozambique’s interior, arriving at Tofo Beach in the afternoon. Possible late surf if conditions allow. Dinner — fresh fish, peri peri chicken, the Mozambican food hits from day one.
Days 3–6 — Tofo Beach (4 surf days, 5 nights)
Five nights based at Tofo with four full days of surf across one of the most varied lineups on the African coast. The main break is Tofino Point — a quality right-hander out front. Around the corner sits The Slab, a heavier, more consequence-laden wave for when the group is ready to step up.
Further up the coast is African Kirra — a powerful, barrelling setup that earns its nickname. Secret spots and fun beach breaks fill out the rotation depending on conditions and what the group needs.
Day 7 — Tofo to Maputo
Long drive south back to Maputo for a second layover night.
Day 8 — Maputo to Ponta do Ouro
A drive south through back roads and reserve country — around three hours — arriving at Ponta do Ouro in time for a possible afternoon surf. Dinner in one of the best seafood towns in southern Africa.
Days 9–11 — Ponta do Ouro (3 surf days, 4 nights)
Four nights at Ponta do Ouro with three full days of surf at the Point of Gold. The headline wave is the main point — an 800-metre sand-bottom right-hander that produces proper barrels and long walling sections ideal for turns. The kind of wave that makes a long drive feel like nothing once you’re in it. Nearby points and beach breaks provide variety when conditions or energy call for a change of pace.
Day 12 — Early surf, drive to Ballito
One final morning session at Ponta before the drive back to Ballito for a last night. Departure the following day.
