Foiling in the Maldives – Can You Foil At Maldives Surf Resorts?

Foiling has exploded in popularity across the globe over the past few years. What started as a niche discipline has quickly become one of the most innovative ways to ride waves, allowing you to surf with incredible speed and efficiency. Naturally, many travelling surfers are now asking the same question when planning a Maldives surf trip: Can I foil there?

The answer depends on where you stay.

Because many Maldives surf breaks sit within resort-managed zones, each property has its own rules about which ocean activities are permitted at nearby waves. Some resorts have embraced foiling, while others restrict it due to safety, crowding, or wave-sharing considerations.

Here’s a simple guide to where foiling is currently allowed — and where it isn’t — at several popular Maldives surf resorts.

And if you have any questions about foiling in the Maldives or want to book your trip – chat to our team and we’ll be happy to help, many of us foil and FoilDrive too!

Maldives Resorts Where Foiling Is Allowed

Niyama Private Islands

Located in the southern atolls, Niyama has one of the most unique surf setups in the Maldives with Vodi, a powerful left-hand reef break located directly off the resort. The property has taken a progressive approach to ocean sports and foiling is permitted here.

Because Vodi is accessible direct from the resort, foilers can take advantage of uncrowded windows and long rides when the swell lines up. Is you’re looking to tackle some surrounding breaks chat to their surf team about boat times.

Anantara Veli, Anantara Dhigu & Naladhu Resort

These three sister resorts sit in the South Malé Atoll, providing access to several famous waves including their home break Nonyas which is perfect for foiling. Guests staying across the Anantara and Naladhu properties can access guided surf transfers, and foiling is allowed.

South Malé’s long reef passes can offer excellent foiling opportunities when conditions are right, particularly on cleaner, less crowded days. As with traditional surfing, access is typically managed by the resort surf team.

Medhufushi Island Resort

Further south in Meemu Atoll, Medhufushi offers access to a range of quality reef breaks that see significantly fewer surfers than the central atolls. The resort allows foiling alongside regular surfing, and the waves in this area are well suited for foilers.

Because the surf zones here are less crowded than the better-known atolls, this would be our foiler recommendation – and the surf guides here offer tow services too.

Six Senses Laamu

Arguably one of the most iconic surf resorts in the Maldives, Six Senses Laamu sits in front of Yin Yang, a world-class right-hander that breaks on the edge of the atoll.

The resort has been relatively progressive when it comes to ocean sports, and foiling is allowed within the managed surf program. However, due to the power and speed of Yin Yang when it’s pumping, foiling typically works best during smaller swells or on mellower surrounding breaks and this is one for experienced foilers only.

As always, coordination with the surf guides is essential to keep the lineup running smoothly.

Resorts Where Foiling Is Not Allowed

While foiling is gaining acceptance, several well-known Maldives surf resorts currently do not permit foiling.

Ayada Maldives

Ayada offers access to the excellent Five Islands surf area in the deep south. However, foiling is not currently accomodated by their surf transfer programmer

Cinnamon Dhonveli (Pasta Point)

Home to the famous Pasta Point, this resort maintains strict surf access management and foiling is not allowed. With limited surfer numbers and a powerful, fast-breaking reef, the focus here remains firmly on traditional surfing.

Kuda Villingili Resort

Situated directly in front of Chickens, one of the Maldives’ longest right-handers, the area certainly attracts a lot of surfers so the surf team here have decided not to accommodate foilers

Lohis (Adaaran Hudhuranfushi Surf Resort)

Guests staying at Hudhuranfushi have exclusive access to Lohis, a fun left-hander breaking off the island. Like several other North Malé setups, the resort maintains traditional surf-only access and foiling is not allowed.

Why Some Resorts Restrict Foiling

Foils introduce new safety considerations in surf lineups. The underwater foil mast and wing can pose risks in crowded take-off zones, especially with the speed foilers travel at, which many surfers are not accustomed too.

Many some Maldives surf breaks also operate under managed surfer limits, with resorts guaranteeing uncrowded sessions as part of the surf package. Adding foils into these environments can complicate lineup dynamics, particularly when waves are busy.

For this reason, some resorts have immediately ruled out foiling.

The Future of Foiling in the Maldives

As foiling continues to evolve, more Maldives resorts may begin exploring how it can fit into their surf programs. The countries long reef passes and consistent swells create ideal conditions for foil surfing — especially on smaller or less crowded days.

And there are many foil retreats up and running already – usally via charter boat to access more remote, uncrowded breaks that ideal for foilers.

For now, however, it’s essential for travelling surfers to check the rules of their specific resort before bringing a foil board. Policies can vary significantly from one property to another, and respecting local guidelines ensures the experience stays safe and enjoyable for everyone in the water.

For those keen to explore this new frontier, the Maldives already offers a handful of resorts where foiling is welcomed — and the list may only grow in the years ahead.
