Indonesia has been pulling surfers from around the world for decades — and it’s not hard to see why.
World-class reef breaks, warm water year-round, an incredible variety of waves within a small geographic area and a surf culture that’s unlike anywhere else on the planet. Bali is the obvious starting point, but the islands beyond — Lombok, Lembongan, Java — reward surfers willing to explore.
Our team has spent serious time across Indonesia and knows this part of the world as well as any region we cover.

Indonesia delivers a density of world-class waves that no other country can match. Bali alone has more household-name breaks than most surf destinations — and the surrounding islands add layer after layer of variety.
The water is warm, the swells are consistent from May to September, and the sheer range of wave types means there’s something for every level and every style of surfing.
From the iconic reeling lefts of Uluwatu and Padang Padang to East Coast favourite Keramas, Bali has more world-class waves than you can imagine. But it’s not just about Bali – get off the beaten track, and you’ll discover empty waves in Java perfect for learning and progressing, or island hop to neighbouring Nusa Lembongan for a slower pace of life and plenty of waves, an easy paddle off the beach.
And the up-and-coming island of Lombok offers up a huge variety of breaks too – including some longboarding favourites.
